Vietnam’s international payments via SWIFT grows 13pct/yr

The State Bank of Vietnam (SBV) and the Society for Worldwide Interbank Financial Telecommunication (SWIFT) on August 20 organised an annual meeting in Vietnam.
SWIFT Vietnam was established in 1996, after the first six banks in Vietnam including SBV, Vietcombank, BIDV, Agribank, VietinBank and Eximbank became members of SWIFT in March 1995.
Pham Bao Lam – director of the central bank’s exchange cum President of VIETSWIFT said that, at present, the SWIFT Vietnam community includes the central bank and about 80 commercial banks, registering 88 SWIFT codes, of which, there were 44 SWIFT codes of commercial joint stock banks and 43 SWIFT codes of foreign banks and foreign bank branches.
According to the SWIFT’s statistics, Vietnam ranks at the 63rd position amongst 212 countries in the world in terms of flows with the volume of 15,000 messages per day, reaching the growth of nearly 13%/year. However, in comparison with other countries in Southeast Asia region, Vietnam ranks only at the 6th place in terms of message flows while the number of banks at the second place, just behind Singapore.
