The Security Council formally nominates Guterres of Portugal as Secretary-General of the United Nations

United Nations Security Council nominated officially and unanimously, on Thursday, former Portuguese Prime Minister Antonio Guterres, to the post of the next Secretary General of the International Organization recommended the United Nations General Assembly, which includes 193 members appointed for five years starting from the first of January 2017.

It is likely that the General Assembly meets next week, according to "Reuters", to confirm the appointment of Gutierrez, 67, who will replace South Korea's Ban Ki-moon (72 years), who is stepping down at the end of 2016 after two terms of office.

Guterres and served as prime minister of Portugal from 1995 to 2002 and as United Nations High Commissioner for Refugees (UNHCR) from 2005 to 2015.
