Iraqi Troops Enter Mosul Airport and Ghazlani Base

Half of the airport and the base have been retaken

MOSUL — The Iraqi Security Forces (ISF) resumed the western Mosul operation on early Thursday and managed to storm the city's main airport and the nearby Ghazlani military base.

Raid Jawdat Shakir, a commander from the Iraqi federal police told BasNews on Thursday the ISF including rapid response forces, federal police and anti-terrorism forces stormed Mosul airport and Ghazlani military camp, the biggest military base in northern Iraq.

According to Shakir, the Iraqi troops have taken control of half of the airport and the military camp thus far.

He added that 10 Islamic State (IS) suicide bombers were also eliminated during today's clashes.

After retaking the eastern half of Mosul earlier in January, recapturing the city's airport and the Ghazlani military base, located in south-western Mosul, has been the ISF's priority. Both locations are militarily of immense importance for launching the operations on the western half of the city which is still held by the IS militants.

Iraqi Army Preparing for Hawija Assault: Peshmerga Commander


Around 2,500 IS militants are in the city

KIRKUK — Iraqi army is preparing for the long-awaited operation to liberate Hawija district, 55 km south-west of Kirkuk province, which is the last Islamic State (IS) held area in the province.

Wasta Rasoul, the commander of Peshmerga forces in southern Kirkuk, told BasNews on Thursday that the Iraqi army is preparing to move onto the IS-held town of Hawija. He noted that the Peshmerga forces are also ready to take part in the battle.

He disclosed that around 2,500 IS militants are present in Hawija.

The residents of Hawija are undergoing severe conditions, Rasoul added.

Hawija operation has been postponed while it was slated to start before the operation of liberating Mosul. Kirkuk officials say the province remains a target for the terrorists as long as Hawija is under the IS control.
