Iraqi Position Network
An Iraqi commander expected to expel an al-Qaeda organization from Mosul in May despite the organization's resistance in the densely populated Old City district.
The source of the team's first corner, "Osman al-Ghanmi," a statement by the "Iraqi position" as saying that the battle will end "within three weeks maximum."
The organization has lost control of most of the city's neighborhoods since the offensive began in October and is now surrounded by troops in neighborhoods north-west of the city, including the center of the historic Old City district.
The United Nations believes up to half a million people remain in the region, including 400,000 in the Old City, with limited food and water supplies and no hospitals.
Militant gunmen are holed up among civilians and often carry out strong counter-attacks to prevent troops from approaching the Grand Mosque (al-Nouri Mosque) in the Old City, where the organization's leader Abu Bakr al-Baghdadi has announced the establishment of a succession state in areas of Iraq and Syria.
