Iraqi Prime Minister Haidar al-Abadi said on Thursday he was referring to the judiciary as "serious" corruption in his efforts to combat the scourge.
"The Supreme Council for Combating Corruption has discussed serious corruption files that have been investigated and referred to the judiciary, and those responsible have already been prosecuted," a government statement quoted Abadi as saying.
The statement did not disclose the names of these "officials" or the nature of the files mentioned. "Abadi stressed the need to pay attention to investigative evidence in the files of corruption, reflecting the accuracy in the follow-up of the issues and the prosecution of all files of corruption, regardless of the date of receipt.
He also stressed during the meeting "the importance of following up all issues related to corruption and report on them and focus on the major corruption crimes that led to the theft of public money."
Iraq is considered one of the most corrupt countries in the world according to the International Transparency Organization. International reports indicate the involvement of many senior officials in various corruption operations, some of whom have fled abroad for fear of prosecution.
World Bank and Transparency International reports confirm the theft of "fictitious" figures from the state treasury, including the disappearance of an estimated $ 600 billion under former Prime Minister Nuri al-Maliki. The value of money smuggled out of Iraq from the country's public budget over the past years is estimated at $ 361 billion While other sources valued at more than $ 500 billion in just 10 years, I went to accounts outside the country, specifically in countries such as Britain, Latin American countries, African and Arab countries, Turkey and Iran.
