Turkmenistan to denominate national currency in January 2009

Turkmenistan will circulate the denominated national currency on January 1, 2009. 1000 manat will equal 1 manat after the denomination. Turkmen President Gurbanguly Berdimuhamedov signed a decree to this effect at a government meeting on April 14.

While signing the decree on the national currency denomination, the president said the state budget for 2009 would be adopted at new prices calculated on the basis of an appreciated manat owing to the unification of the currency exchange rate.

The decree instructs Turkmenistan's banks to ensure the unlimited exchange of old currency notes to new currency notes starting January 1, 2009 till December 31, 2009, the Turkmenistan.ru correspondent reports from Ashgabat.

During this period, old currency notes will be used along with new currency notes as legal means of payment in all kinds of cash payments. Starting the day the denomination takes effect, price tags for goods, services and works should indicate new and old prices.

Deputy chairmen of the cabinet of ministers, minister of finances, minister of economics and development, chairman of the Central Bank of Turkmenistan, regional governors and the governor of Ashgabat, chairman of the Supreme Supervising Body of Turkmenistan were tasked to control the implementation of the decree.

The full text of the decree was published in the central newspapers of Turkmenistan.
