(Baghdad: Al-Furat News) The Ministry of Planning suggested that the poverty rate will decline from 22% to 18% in 2018.

"The indicators announced on Friday did not include the poverty rate, and we will announce them in the coming days," ministry spokesman Abdel-Zahra al-Hindawi told AFP. "There are initial indications of a decline in poverty rate from 2014."

He explained that "the indicators announced yesterday talked about the level of spending and unemployment and the level of services and citizens' possession of durable goods and educational level," noting that "we announced the first phase of the indicators that have been audited."

Hindawi said that "the indicators of the poverty rate was carried out through the evaluation survey in coordination with the World Bank and in accordance with international standards are very strict and reflect the reality of 80% to 90%."

He added that "after 2014, the poverty rate rose to 22%, and from 2017 to 2018 occurred a lot of variables in the forefront of the return of displaced people and they caused the increase in poverty," and expected "decline rates below 22% to 18%, but a large proportion.

Hindawi concluded by saying that "the Ministry launched in early 2018 strategy to reduce poverty for five years, the plan aims to reduce poverty below the 15% in 2022."
