The International Trade Agreement (TPP) entered into force on Sunday after being ratified by a majority of the participating countries.
Western media reported that the 11-nation "Trans-Pacific Trade Partnership Agreement" (TPP) entered into force today after being ratified by the required majority of the 11 countries.
The agreement is a huge free economic zone covering a market of 500 million people, representing 13 percent of the world's gross domestic product.
The TPP consolidates the rules on investment and services in a wide range of areas. It also gradually abolishes tariffs on agricultural and industrial products.
The Japanese government regards the trade agreement as an important step towards spreading the rules of free and fair trade around the world amid the protectionist policies pursued by the US government. The United States has withdrawn from the TPP.
The Japanese government plans to actively expand the TPP. And hopes to start concrete talks with a ministerial meeting scheduled for January 19 in Japan.
