IS Leader Hiding in Desert



ISTANBUL — Islamic State (IS) leader, Abu Bakr al-Baghdadi, has left Mosul and is now hiding out in the desert among sympathetic civilians, according to US and Iraqi officials.

However, his exact whereabouts are unknown as he rarely uses trackable communication devices and changes his location, and vehicles en route to a new location numerous times each day, said the officials.

Currently, IS operational commanders along with thousands of militants are leading the battle in western Mosul. Eastern Mosul was declared liberated on January 24th. However, al-Baghdadi did not release a recorded speech to comment on the territorial loss of his self-proclaimed caliphate. His last speech, wherein he encouraged his supporters to not give up, but fight the "unbelievers," was released in November, about two weeks after the operation to recapture the city from IS militants commenced.

Although there is no end date set for the operation, officials have said that the operation is progressing satisfactorily. The fight in the western part of the city is expected to be more intense than the eastern part, due to the old, narrow structure of the city, which in certain areas is not accommodating to military vehicles.

The intensity of the expected fight notwithstanding, officials are optimistic about taking full control of Mosul along with Raqqa. However, this does not mean that the IS as an organization will be destroyed. As their recruitment is ongoing, and the organization has a hierarchical structure, even if al-Baghdadi is killed along with other top IS commanders, others will rise to take their place.

The operation to recapture Mosul began on October 17th of last year. The operation moved on to the western half of the city on February 19th.

Heavy Clashes Between IS, Iraqi Forces West of Mosul



LEEDS — Heavy clashes between the Iraqi forces and the Islamic State (IS) militants erupted on Wednesday in the district of Tayyaran after the Iraqi troops sawed off an IS counter-attack near the main government building in Mosul hours after recapturing it from the terrorist group.

The Iraqi forces further managed to liberate the districts of al-Mansour and al-Shuhada in western Mosul, causing further damages on the IS militants who put all efforts to keep the territories remaining under their control in western Mosul.

The government forces recaptured the entire eastern part of Mosul at the beginning of the year, allowing thousands of civilians to return to their homes. On the 19th of February the Prime Minister of Iraq launched a new phase of the operation against the IS militants, aiming to retake the western part of the city.

Secretary General of the Ministry of Peshmerga Jabbar Yawar team, announced that the liberation of Mosul from the control of the organization "Daesh" completely terrorist Pat soon, while noting the existence of other military operations after the battle of Mosul, said the Peshmerga forces are ready to take part in those operations.
