Security Council members go to Iraq
Friday, April 13,
Alsumaria News / Baghdad
The United Nations said on Friday that the 15 members of the UN Security Council will travel from April 26 to May 2 to Burma, Bangladesh and Iraq.
The Security Council has been seeking for several months to organize a visit to Burma, where 700,000 Rohingyas fled since August to neighboring Bangladesh, following military operations launched by the army and described by the United Nations as ethnic cleansing.
The Secretary-General of the United Nations, Antonio Guterres, should appoint a special representative to resolve the crisis in Burma.
Asked if the ambassadors of the 15 countries would have the opportunity to visit Rakhine state, where the Burmese army is accused of atrocities against the Rohingya minority, a diplomatic source said, "Logistically, it is very complicated. We will ask to fly over the area by helicopter."
Another diplomat told Agence France-Presse that the aim of the visit to Burma was to push for improved living conditions for the refugees, to deter human rights violations and to talk to the Burmese authorities about Kofi Annan's plan to give identity and rights to the minority of the Rohingya.
The council's visit to Iraq is aimed at showing UN support for elections scheduled for May 12.
