More than 6 million Iraqi workers in the private sector are looking for approval by the House of Representatives for the new social insurance bill after it was approved by the government at the end of last year, which includes all workers in the country.

"The number of workers in the private sector now stands at more than 6 million, about 200,000 of whom are registered under the Social Security Law," said Mohammed Saleh, the prime minister's adviser on financial affairs.

Saleh added that "the Iraqi government approved a new draft law on behalf of social insurance in the private sector, in accordance with the new direction of the social market economy," explaining that "the new legislation, which is expected to be passed by parliament gives private sector workers the right to social security (pensions).

"Private sector pensions will depend on the percentage of monthly contributions for the same worker, but in any case salaries will not be below the poverty line minimum of $ 2.5 per day," he said.

On the future plans and strategies to support the private sector, he explained that "the private sector strategy 2018-2022, aims to raise the volume of investment in the private sector from 34 percent now to 40 percent, with government investment constituting 60 percent."

Iraq, through the draft new social insurance law, seeks to establish a pension fund working in the private sector and equalize with retirees of employees (public sector).

This depends on the state's support for the fund. The salaries of workers in the private sector amount to 270,000 dinars (about 210 dollars), while the state pensioners pay pensions to some of them to one million dinars (900 dollars).

The World Labor Day coincides with hundreds of workers in government institutions holding temporary contracts to strike because they have not been paid.

Since the beginning of April 2018, hundreds of daily wage workers in Iraqi Ministry of Electricity companies in the governorates of Diwaniyah, Najaf, Karbala, Babil, Baghdad, Basra, Maysan and Nasiriyah have resorted to a strike due to non-payment of their dues.

For his part, a member of the trade union movement in Baghdad, Yasser Kazem, Anatolia, said that "more than 200 thousand workers in the system of daily wages working in the majority of Iraqi ministries are still unknown fate."

"Some of them have resorted to a strike after their monthly salaries, which do not exceed 250 dinars ($ 200), have been suspended from the institutions where they work, on the grounds that the government has ordered them," Kazem said.

He pointed out that "200 thousand workers in the system of daily wages, and those who spent years in the work, requires the government to redress them and turn them into permanent employees."

The Iraqi government has introduced a new amendment to the daily wage system, as part of the increase in their monthly salary rates, while calculating the length of their work for retirement.

In turn, the spokesman of the Ministry of Labor and Social Affairs, Ammar Menem, Anatolia, said that "the Ministry of Labor and Social Affairs was able to raise the monthly salaries of workers with daily wages of unskilled labor from 250 thousand dinars to 350 thousand Iraqi dinars (290 dollars).

"The application of the increase will begin with the start of the 2018 budget funds," he said. "The worker's daily wage service was also calculated for retirement purposes."

On the problems faced by some workers in the system of daily wages on the receipt of salaries, among Menem, "The allocations for employees of the system of daily wages disposal of the investment budget, through the implementation of projects, and because of the suspension of many projects, whether for security or financial reasons, "
