(AFP) - US Secretary of State Mike Pompeo said his country is still considering the possibility of issuing exceptional exemptions from sanctions to Iran for countries or companies that continue to deal with them after November 4.

Iraq plans to officially ask its ally, the United States, for exceptions to its sanctions against Iran, particularly on oil trade and dollar handling.

"There are still a number of outstanding decisions that we must make before November 4 on possible exemptions," Pompeo said.

He said he did not know whether the sanctions would affect officials in the SWIFT system of international remittances, if they continue to deal with Iran, a subject divided by the US administration around him, according to US media reports.

However, Pompeo stressed the firm position of President Donald Trump's administration on Tehran: "Make no mistake. After 4 November, there will be completely different rules for anyone who believes it is necessary to deal with the Islamic Republic of Iran. It is a very important day, Many countries have begun to disengage economically from Iran now. "

After Trump announced in May his country's withdrawal from the nuclear deal with Iran, Washington reintroduced all US sanctions lifted from Tehran under the deal and abolished sanctions on foreign companies and countries that continue to deal with Tehran.

These countries and companies were privatized between their investments in Iran and their access to the US market and were given until 4 November to make the decision before the last sanctions on Iran's financial transfers and oil came into effect.
