PUK meets to nominate Iraq presidential candidate

The leadership council of the Patriotic Union of Kurdistan (PUK) is holding a meeting on Wednesday to nominate a presidential candidate to run for the Iraqi presidency.

The sole purpose of the meeting is to vote on the party’s nominee, who will later be endorsed by the politburo of the party.

Top PUK candidates include PUK founder Fuad Masum, former prominent member Barham Salih, Mala Bakhtivar, Lateef Rashid and Mohammed Sabir.

By far, Salih is considered to be the strongest candidate, having been endorsed by Iran, the U.S. and the party itself.

Sardar Abdullah, a former Gorran MP, and Omar Barzinji, Iraq’s ambassador to Rome, also nominated themselves as independent candidates.

For his part, head of PUK politburo Bakhtivar announced during a press conference with Brett McGurk, that he hopes the Kurdish side agrees on one unified decision.

“The two main Kurdish parties will announce their candidate by the end of the week,” Bakhtivar added.

It is worth mentioning that Halbousi’s election marks the beginning of a 90-day process outlined in the Iraqi constitution, designed to eventually lead to a new government.

Barham Salih had previously defected from the Patriotic Union of Kurdistan (PUK), and parliamentary elections last May were held by an independent party called the Alliance for Democracy.

The Arab media, has quoted a member of the Patriotic Union of Kurdistan, that the parliament's vote on the selection of his boss on Saturday pushed for a quick resolution of the issue of the selection of a new president of Iraq, indicating that the Kurdish forces are working seriously to resolve this issue, before next Tuesday, A date for the election of the President of the Republic.

He pointed out that the acceptance enjoyed by the former Deputy Prime Minister Barham Saleh by the Iraqi spectrum raised his chances to be one of the Kurdish candidates for the presidency, despite the presence of other candidates for the post, pointing out that "the National Union stipulated on the return of Saleh if the party wants to run for the party" .
