Dismissal of Governor of the Central Bank of Iraq after a corruption investigation

BAGHDAD / With: said Ali al-Moussawi, a media adviser to Iraqi Prime
Minister Nuri al-Maliki said the Iraqi cabinet decided on Tuesday sacked
Central Bank Governor Sinan Shabibi after an investigation by a
parliamentary committee in accusations of corruption within the bank.

Critics say the decision as the latest step by the government to
strengthen its control over the Central Bank and other financial
institutions.

Maliki won a court ruling in January 2011 put the central bank and
other independent entities under the auspices of the Council of
Ministers.

Moussawi said the Cabinet appointed Abdul Basit Turki Chairman of the
Board of Supreme Audit to manage the central bank "until further
