{Presidential deadline} ends Saturday for choosing a prime minister
Baghdad / Al-Sabah / Muhannad Abdul-Wahab

The President of the Republic, Barham Saleh, gave the political blocs until Saturday, February 1, 2020, as a deadline for resolving the candidate for the presidency of the transitional government. Otherwise, he sees “it is obligatory to exercise my constitutional powers by assigning those whom I find most acceptable to parliament and people”, while the political blocs are still present More than one scenario for choosing the next prime minister.

Saleh said in a message addressed to the parliamentary blocs: «Iraq is facing serious political junctures that all of us must confront it with responsibility, to avoid further complications in the Iraqi scene, and to achieve the legitimate demands of the people to form a new government that paves the way for the upcoming elections».

"Since Prime Minister Adel Abdul Mahdi submitted his official resignation to the House of Representatives, political and parliamentary debates were launched for the purpose of choosing a candidate to take over the government, and unfortunately due to political debates and tensions, these deliberations have not yet led to an understanding of a candidate (not controversial). The Presidency of the Council of Ministers is able to address the requirements of the stage and achieve the political and popular consensus required to cross the country to safety and restore order and prepare for the upcoming elections, which called the Supreme Religious Authority and the national forces and demonstrators to request those concerned to expedite the resolution of the suspicious file The government's ».

Saleh called on the parliamentary blocs concerned with the nomination of the Prime Minister to "resume the constructive and serious political dialogue in order to agree on a new candidate for the presidency of the Council of Ministers that enjoys popular approval and submit it to the Presidency of the Republic in order to issue an order of assignment." Inevitably, you estimate that the President of the Republic has a national and constitutional duty to push towards resolving the crisis, and if the concerned blocs are not able to resolve the nomination order by no later than Saturday, February 1, 2020, I see an obligation to exercise my constitutional powers by assigning those I find most acceptable to Parliament and people, and within the framework of the outputs The consultations I had during the last period ».

The Iraqi parliament prepares to hold an extraordinary session to nominate a "popularly acceptable" prime minister

01/20/2020 21:50:11

Shafaq News / Deputy Speaker of the House of Representatives Bashir Al-Haddad expressed on Thursday the parliament’s readiness to hold an extraordinary session at any time to vote on a new prime minister instead of resigning Adel Abdul Mahdi, provided that it enjoys “popular acceptability”.

The President of the Republic, Barham Ahmed Saleh, had given the political blocs a deadline to expire on the first of next February to choose a new president for the federal government.

Al-Haddad said in a statement today that "the parties to the political process must accelerate the settlement of a candidate for prime minister because the situation has become very disturbing in light of the continued demonstrations and casualties daily and the persistence of tension, so the government should assume its responsibilities to protect peaceful demonstrators and respond to their legitimate demands and maintain security."

And he added that "the House of Representatives is fully prepared to provide support and assistance to find quick and practical solutions, and the Council will hold at any time its special session to give confidence to the new government in the event that a candidate for prime minister and ministerial portfolios is agreed upon, and the candidate in charge should have popular acceptance, and be agreed upon by All Parties".

Iraq has seen since early October last demonstrations in the capital Baghdad and a number of regions, and cities with a Shiite majority calling for the departure of the political class that has ruled the country since the fall of the United States of America to Saddam Hussein with going to early elections.
