Baghdad - Iraq today:

The American Al-Monitor website discussed the cooperation plan announced by Egypt, which includes the establishment of a land and sea route linking it with Jordan and reaching Iraq, to enhance economic cooperation and commercial movement between the three countries, which is likely to have much wider regional horizons.

This trade route is supposed to start in Cairo and extend to Amman and then Baghdad, at a cost of $ 130 per person, including the cost of the sea crossing between Nuweiba in Egypt and Aqaba in Jordan.

On the first of March 2021, the Egyptian Ministry of Transport announced that the agreement was signed between the Egyptian Transport Authority and the private Egyptian "Super Jet" company, the Jordanian "Jet" company, and the Iraqi Public Transport Company. The Egyptian Minister of Transport, Kamel Al-Wazir, met with the Jordanian ambassador to Cairo, Amjad Al-Adaileh, on the first of March to discuss bilateral relations, and stressed the importance of the protocol signed between the two countries with Iraq to establish the land line for transporting passengers between the three countries.

According to the "Al-Monitor" report, it is the first time that this protocol has been unveiled, about which no further details are available, including its possible cost and when to start implementing it. The American website tried to contact the Egyptian Ministry of Transport, which refused to provide further details.

However, the Egyptian Ministry of Transport stated in its statement that the land route aims to facilitate movement between the three countries and the travel of Egyptian workers and students to Jordan and Iraq.

According to the Egyptian Ministry's statement, the Egyptian and Jordanian parties discussed during the meeting the possibility of enhancing trade between the two countries by overcoming obstacles in their ports in an attempt to facilitate the transfer of Egyptian goods to Amman and from there to neighboring countries, including to Syria and Iraq, and vice versa.

They also stressed the importance of developing the "Arab Bridge Navigation" company owned by the three countries, Iraq, Egypt and Jordan. It is a company that was founded in 1985 and has branches in the three countries, and aims to enhance maritime transport between them across the Red Sea and outside it, and seeks to act as an Arab bridge linking countries. Arab in Asia in the Arab countries in Africa.

Since the end of the year 2020, continuous attempts have been made between representatives of the three countries to enhance cooperation, the most recent of which was a meeting at the level of foreign ministers on February 8th in Cairo.

The American website quoted Ayman Samir, professor of international relations at Cairo University, as saying that the announcement of the land route comes within the framework of the "New Sham" project, which includes several economic projects that serve the peoples of the three countries and benefit from their resources and capabilities.

The site pointed out that the "New Sham Project" was an idea presented by Iraqi Prime Minister Mustafa Al-Kazemi during the tripartite summit he held with the leaders of Egypt and Jordan in Amman on August 25, 2020, with the hope of securing a long-term investment partnership and broad trade exchanges that strengthen the common Arab market, relying on Iraqi oil. And human capital in Egypt, and the Kingdom of Jordan plays the link between the two countries.

Samir considered that the "New Sham Project" is a political plan between the three leaders to achieve integration between their countries at the economic level, which will lead to the realization of many projects, including contributing to the reconstruction of Iraq in exchange for oil.

Egypt and Jordan are already involved in development projects in Iraq, and Egypt receives shipments of Iraqi oil in return. The two countries also share security cooperation with Iraq in combating terrorism in the region.

Samir said that Egypt can benefit from this important project, which may pave the way for the return of Egyptian workers to Iraq, as was the case before 2003 when four million Egyptians were working in Iraq. He explained that this could lead to a major shift in Egyptian revenues, which depend heavily on remittances from Egyptians abroad.

Samir said that the success of this project may open the way for other countries to join in the future, especially since the three countries have the necessary capabilities to form a "strong political and economic bloc."

As for the economics professor at the Egyptian Ain Shams University, Yaman Hamaki, she told Al-Monitor that road transport routes form a basis for trade, in addition to enhancing the movement of tourists between the three countries, as tourism is one of the state’s basic resources, which may be useful specifically to Amman and Cairo.

Hamaki pointed out to another aspect, that the land route will also contribute to strengthening the Egyptian role in the "Agadir Agreement" that it signed with Jordan, Morocco and Tunisia in May 2001, which aims to establish a trade zone between the four countries that would enhance complementary cooperation between the signatory countries and facilitate the movement of exports to Europe.

According to Al-Monitor, relations between Egypt and Iraq at the political level have been good since 2013, but at the economic level, the volume of trade reached 486 million dollars in 2019, including 479 million dollars for Egyptian exports to Iraq, and seven million dollars for Iraqi exports to Egypt. .

Professor of political relations at Cairo University, Tarek Fahmy, considered that the announcement of the land route sends an important message that the alliance between the three countries entered the implementation stage through economic projects, and is no longer limited to political action alone.
