The head of the Bayariq Al-Khair Parliamentary Bloc, MP Muhammad Othman Al-Khaldi, confirmed, on Tuesday, that the demands to restore the exchange rate of the dollar came for electoral purposes.

"Determining the exchange rate of the dollar is one of the exclusive powers of the Central Bank of Iraq, according to the law, as it is an independent institution that is concerned with determining the monetary policy in the country, and there is no party capable of interfering with these powers," Khalidi said in an interview with "the information".

He added, "The demands to re-exchange the dollar came for electoral purposes because the law is clear that any adjustment to the exchange rate depends on the decisions of the Central Bank and not any other party, stressing that Parliament does not have any authority to change and interfere in the affairs of the Central Bank is not correct, so we hope that the matter of adjusting the price will be left on The bank is responsible for it.

He pointed out that "we call for a review of the exchange rate according to a framework that guarantees reducing food prices for millions of poor people in Iraq. The exchange rate may be at 1300 acceptable, but the matter remains subject to the decisions of the Central Bank, considering any change of its powers."

A member of Parliament, Abbas Al-Zamili, announced that the reduction of the dollar exchange rate has nothing to do with delaying the approval of the draft federal budget bill, stressing the continuation of pressure on the government in order to restore the exchange rate to its normal position.

Al-Zamili said in a press interview with NRT Arabia, today (March 23, 2021), that "the demands of some political blocs and MPs to restore the exchange rate of the dollar against the Iraqi dinar to its previous position have nothing to do with delaying the legislation of the budget bill in the previous session."

He added, "The reason is the disagreement that is still going on about the Kurdish share in the budget."

He explained, "The pressure will be continuous on the government to restore the exchange rate to its normal position, given that the procedure is governmental and the House of Representatives has no right to make any amendment to it."

He continued, "The financial situation of the country is different at the present time from what was in the past as a result of high global oil prices, so there is no need for the continued rise of the dollar exchange rate."

He pointed out, "a proposal to proceed with voting on the draft budget at the current rate and then collecting parliamentary signatures to issue a binding decision (to force) the government to return to the previous exchange rate."
