IS Radio in Mosul Silenced by Airstrike

MOSUL — Islamic State’s radio is no longer broadcasting in western Mosul as the Iraqi forces continue pushing deeper into the area and liberating more districts from the extremist group, said local sources.

Bayan Radio, the mouthpiece of IS, was stopped from broadcasting on Saturday as the result of intensified airstrikes targeting the IS positions in western Mosul, said Luqman Omer, an Iraqi human rights activist.

With this achievement, IS’ media activity is completely paralyzed as the Bayan Radio was the group’s last mass media channel functioning in the area.

Bayan Radio had started broadcasting in 2015 from central Mosul, reporting on the IS activities in different languages including Arabic, Kurdish, English, French and Russian.

TEL AFAR — The commander of Islamic State (IS) Special Forces in Tel Afar has been killed during Saturday confrontations with pro-government militia forces, a military source confirmed.

Sami Masoudi, a Shi’ite commander of Hashd al-Shaabi, said the elimination of the jihadist commander has caused a significant damage to the group in the strategic town of Tel Afar, west of Mosul, and his unit is now experiencing a bitter defeat.

However, the official did not reveal the name of the IS commander.

Since the beginning of the Mosul operation on 17th October last year, the Shi’ite militias of Hashd al-Shaabi have been leading the military operations in the areas of western Mosul. They have also been putting pressure on IS in the majority-Turkmen town of Tel Afar.

Brig. Fadhil Barwari told Kurdistan 24 news broadcaster on Saturday that the drone attacks in Mosul battle indicate that the IS militants are no longer able to defend themselves.

No routes are left for the extremists to escape Mosul and there are only a few militants left in the city, according to the commander.

Reports suggest that the extremist organization has turned to an extensive use of bomb-laden drones and car bombs in the battle to free Mosul.

The Iraqi forces are advancing further into Mosul to free the western part of the city.

The operation to retake the eastern part of Mosul which kicked off on October 17, 2016 took more than three months.

Iraqi Forces Recapture Main Power Station In Mosul

LEEDS — Iraqi Security Forces (ISF) have fully liberated al-Yarmouk power station in western Mosul, the Iraqi Ministry of Defense announced on Saturday.

The ministry’s War Media Cell confirmed in a statement that the power station is providing electricity to the whole city, which makes it a key point in the area.

According to the statement, army troops from the 9th Armored Brigade have managed to liberate al-Yarmouk power station raising the Iraqi flag over its building, IraqiNews reported.

The Prime Minister of Iraq, Haider al-Abadi announced the beginning of a new phase of the Mosul operation on 19th February, aiming at the liberation of western part of the city.

Tensions between local and foreign IS extremists have emerged with the local militants complaining against the foreign jihadists who are withdrawing from the battle, claiming that the IS leader, Abubakir al-Baghdadi has ordered them to move to Syria.

Iraqi forces, backed by coalition air force, launched a new phase of operations on February 19 to reclaim the western half of Mosul which is yet under IS control. Since the beginning of the operations the Iraqi forces have managed to retake a number of areas including Mosul airport and Ghazlani military camp.
