Iraqi Forces Liberate More Areas in Western Mosul



SOFIA — Iraqi security forces managed to liberate several strategic areas in western Mosul, a source from the Iraqi Federal Police said on Monday.

Lieutenant General Raed Shaker Jawdat, Commander of Federal Police service, told BasNews that the Iraqi forces launched fierce battles against the Islamic State (IS) fighters in western Mosul, which led to the killing of about 40 IS militants, including snipers and suicide bombers.

As a result of the clashes the forces were able to free several regions, including the region of al-Nahrawan and western Yarmouk, however the clashes are still ongoing, Jawdat added.

The Iraqi government launched the operation for liberating the norther Iraqi city of Mosul in October 2016, when the Iraqi forces backed by the US-led coalition conducted a massive offensive against the IS militants.

In the beginning of this year, the government forces managed to liberate the entire eastern part of the city. Later on in February, they launched the next phase of the operation aiming to liberate the remaining western parts of the city, including some parts of central Mosul.

The ongoing battles in west Mosul are believed to be much more difficult due to high density of civilian presence in the residential areas.

The federal police announced on Monday the opening of safe corridors to evacuate the entire population from the old city of Mosul before launching large-scale military operations.

"The federal police forces continue their ground military operations and their aircraft, supported by artillery, continue to target the headquarters of the terrorist organization and its constant and mobile defenses and slow progress towards the Nuri Mosque through three main axes," Federal Police Chief Major-General Raed Shaker Jawdat said in a statement.

"They are opening safe corridors to evacuate the entire population from the old city before launching large-scale military operations," he said.

The pace of security forces in some parts of the western side of the city of Mosul has declined due to rain and lack of air cover, as well as the arrival of fighting in densely populated areas.
