TNT:

Fuze:  IMO the good news about all of these developments regarding Mahdi is there lame duck period is shorter than ours. 30 days! If Abahdi wants the credit he has to get Alak to do it NOW! If that new GOI sits, before they finish the rate change part of the reforms, that have already started, it could easily take longer than we would like for the new GOI to make it their own and put their stamp on it...ummm

Rock1941:   fuze good point, i don't know what the ego situation is over there, however we do know where the credit should go

Fuze:  Rock1941, yep and i agree with you about the lack of appreciation these clowns showed Abahdi. He balanced the Iran / US influence, led Iraq through it's darkest period, kept the kurds from leaving and directly over saw the rival of their economy to now a surplus in the budget, while kicking Isis out...smh and they picked someone else...lol..lol..

Harambe:  Reuters: Iraq names new president and premier, ending deadlock (10/2/18)

SULAIMANIYA, Iraq (Reuters) - Iraq’s parliament on Tuesday elected as president Kurdish politician Barham Salih, who immediately named Shi’ite Adel Abdul Mahdi prime minister-designate, ending months of deadlock after an inconclusive national election in May.

The presidency, traditionally occupied by a Kurd, is a largely ceremonial position but the vote for Salih was a key step toward forming a new government, which politicians have failed to do since the election.

Under Iraq’s constitution, Salih - a British-educated engineer aged 58 who has held office in both the Iraqi federal and Kurdish regional governments - had 15 days to invite the nominee of the largest parliamentary bloc to form a government. He chose to do so less than two hours after his election.

Since Saddam Hussein was toppled in a 2003 U.S.-led invasion, power has been shared among Iraq’s three largest ethnic-sectarian components.

The most powerful post, that of prime minister, has traditionally been held by a Shi’ite Arab, the speaker of parliament’s by a Sunni Arab and the presidency by a Kurd.

A former vice president, oil minister, and finance minister, Abdul Mahdi now has 30 days to form a cabinet and present it to parliament for approval.

He faces the daunting tasks of rebuilding much of the country after four years of war with Islamic State militants, healing its ethnic and sectarian tensions, and balancing foreign relations with Iraq’s two major allies - Iran and its arch-foe the United States.

Abdul Mahdi, 76, is a trained economist who left Iraq in 1969 for exile in France, where he worked for think tanks and edited magazines in French and Arabic. He is the son of a respected Shi’ite cleric who was a minister in the era of Iraq’s monarchy, overthrown in 1958.

He was nominated by two rival blocs, one led by Shi’ite cleric Moqtada al-Sadr and outgoing Prime Minister Haider al-Abadi and the other by Iran-backed militia leader Hadi al-Amiri and former premier Nuri al-Maliki.

Both blocs claim to hold a parliamentary majority but the dispute has been rendered irrelevant by their choice of the same man to be premier.

“The nomination of Mr Adel Abdul Mahdi came after an agreement between the Binaa bloc and the Islah bloc to nominate him via consensus and not a majority bloc in order to get past the issue of which is the majority bloc,” said Ahmed al-Asadi, a spokesman for the Binaa bloc led by Amiri and Maliki.

Don961:  Prime Minister of Iraq

The Prime Minister of Iraq is Iraq's head of government. The Prime Minister was originally an appointed office, subsidiary to the head of state, and the nominal leader of the Iraqi parliament. Under the newly adopted constitution the Prime Minister is to be the country's
active executive authority. Nouri al-Maliki (formerly Jawad al-Maliki) was selected to be Prime Minister on 21 April 2006. On 14 August 2014 al-Maliki agreed to step down as prime minister of Iraq to allow Haider al-Abadi to take his place.

Appointment

The Council of Representatives elected the President of the Republic and his Deputies, including the President of the Council of Ministers.

The Presidency Council then shall name a Prime Minister unanimously. According to this, The Presidency Council must agree on a candidate for the post within two weeks. In the event that it fails to do so, the responsibility of naming the Prime Minister reverts to the National Assembly. In that event, the Council of Representatives must confirm the nomination by an absolute majority. If the Prime Minister is unable to nominate his Council of Ministers within one month, the Presidency Council shall name another Prime Minister.
Agencies directly subordinate

The Iraqi Counter Terrorism Bureau reports to the Prime Minister directly. The Iraqi CTB oversees the Iraqi Counter Terrorism Command, a formation that includes all Iraqi Special Operations Forces. As of 30 June 2009, there had been legislation in progress for a year to make the Iraqi CTB a separate ministry.   link

Kaperoni :  So its official...a new president of the Republic of Iraq...Barham Saleh.   By the way the choices so far for president of parliament and president of the Republic of Iraq are pro economic reform.  If Madhi gets in as prime minister we should see reforms start very soon including currency reform.

David M. Witty‏ : Iraqi Parliament elects Barham Salih as Iraqi president. He is a former PM of Iraqi Kurdish Regional Government.
