Baghdad - Journal News
Informed political sources said on Sunday that the opening of the Green Zone to citizens will be postponed until next month.
The sources said that Prime Minister Adel Abdul-Mahdi decided to postpone the opening of the Green Zone in front of citizens until the beginning of next month until the completion of the preparation of roads that will open to pedestrians.
The Green Zone was due to open on Sunday after the Baghdad Municipality carried out a maintenance and rehabilitation campaign for roads under construction in the past few days.
Informed sources had revealed earlier, the objection of the US embassy to open the Green Zone.
The sources said the US embassy was exerting heavy pressure on the Iraqi government to prevent the opening of the Green Zone.
Abdul-Mahdi has announced during his tenure as prime minister his intention to open the Green Zone in front of citizens to ease traffic jams in the capital Baghdad.
The Green Zone, located in the heart of the capital Baghdad, is an international zone under tight security, given the presence of foreign embassies and diplomatic missions as well as the headquarters of the Iraqi government, the presidency and the House of Representatives.
