Don961:  Baghdad Liberation Square .. The symbol of freedom and carrying the dreams of the demonstrators

Al-Tahrir Square in central Baghdad was not only a square and a monument. It is a geographical spot in which to discover and shout what it aspires for the homeland of its politicians.

"This monument is the real witness to our relentless attempts to save Iraq from drowning in the blood and bring it back to the democratic process to be the country we have long dreamed of," al-Sumari told Al-Jazeera Net.

Alsumari and his fellow protesters chose Tahrir Square as a site for their protests because of its proximity to the Iraqi government and foreign embassies in the Green Zone of Baghdad, but also because they represent to them Iraqis the meaning of freedom that this people have missed for decades.

Its importance

is Tahrir square located in the Bab al-Sharqi area. It is one of the main squares of the capital, Baghdad, and it is named after the claim of freedom from injustice and tyranny against the peoples.

On its eastern side is the Freedom Monument, the most famous monument in Baghdad, designed and executed by Iraqi sculptor Jawad Salim, to witness dozens of uprisings, protests and revolutions.

The Freedom Monument contains 14 pieces, symbolizing the 14 July 1958 uprising, which is the spark of the Iraqi uprisings. The monument expresses detention and torture in prisons, a prisoner who takes away bars, others who raise the grip of freedom, and other expressions of freedom from slavery.

Sumer says Tahrir Square to symbolize the meaning of freedom that I miss the Iraqis for decades ( the island) beating against the rights of co Ali Sumari Iraqi demonstrations since its inception in February 2011, continues unabated or despair, to become one of the founders and leaders of the demonstrations in 2015, which is the strongest event In Iraq after the US invasion of the country in 2003.

"The Freedom Monument is the true witness to our oppression, our siege, our beating and our arrest by the corrupt people in all the demonstrations, not only because we demanded reform of the political system that brought us to the devastation that beset us today from all directions. We were not a group of intellectuals and artists, We were the voice of Iraq, the Iraqis stood with their different sects, their different regions and their different nationalities, under the banner of freedom, and we demonstrated together for an Iraq and gave us everything, we only gave it disappointment. "

Al-Sumari asserts that this arena will not stop attracting all aspiring to the desired change, and will remain with its immortal monument the focus of all those who aspire to change the miserable reality for the better.

While the memory of Sarsam, a civil activist, recalls the first call to demonstrate in Tahrir Square in 2011. The demonstrators took the scene because of the symbolism of the Freedom Monument and the impact it left on its connection with Tahrir Square in Egypt and the spark of the revolution that began on January 25, 2011 , Where immediately after the largest Iraqi demonstrations took effect on 25 February 2011.

"Today's monument has become an important shrine and a landmark for every Iraqi. Most of the media have adopted a slogan that symbolizes the revolution against corruption. Many politicians have tried to polish their image by using the monument as a slogan for an election campaign or employing it in one way or another.

Sarsam believes that the government is trying to use the place of Tahrir square and set it up in campaigns, and the Commission has taken part of the monument as a new slogan.

Baghdad bombings did not prevent journalist Imad al-Shara from heading Akkazin Tahrir Square to the demonstrations that began in July 2015 to support the demonstrations that took place in southern Iraq in Basra specifically for poor services and the interruption of electricity and water in a chapter is almost the warmest during the year.

Shara pointed out that the most prominent demonstrations and vigils witnessed in this arena were in 2011 and 2015 and beyond, which contributed significantly to change many of the behavior and symbols of the State Administration.

Al-Shara believes that the demonstrations were able - and only partially - to deliver their voice, and it was a justification to protest against any statement or decision released by officials, so that they can cancel it with their own voice.

We have been able to scream in the face of their decisions, felt the reality of the threat of their chairs and positions, so they prepare the preparation of each of them through their security and barbed wire, every Friday they close all roads leading to liberation to reduce the number of demonstrators to the minimum number possible, but the masses of millions tend to kiss them every time "He said.

Profound significance

and remember this scene artist theater activist Daoud Eid and his childhood, and even the stages of his studies at the Institute of Fine Arts.

"The first day of my studies at the Institute of Fine Arts was the monument of Jawad Salim standing in the door of the institute, as if he were welcoming new students. When the reading took me and the world of culture and art, I understood the meaning, significance and depth of that waqf. Brag to others.

He believes that the scene has been the heart of Baghdad and its political spirit since the 1960s, in addition to its proximity to the Green Zone, which in itself is a challenge to the ruler. He believes that the 2011 demonstrations shook the ruling class. The most authentic and the most innocent of the 2015 demonstrations were politicized, Many politically biased to lose their basic demand.

Tahrir Square is associated with journalist Afrah Shawqi and an Amnesty International member when she heard voices unite in the same square to press for her release after being abducted by militias for her views.

"Unfortunately," the authorities continued to mobilize armies and forces to undermine the demonstrations and protests, and failed and sabotage, but could not extinguish it, Tahrir Square remained the sanctuary of the oppressed citizen and demanding his rights.

"Most of the media channels have sensed the importance of this arena and have become the perfect place to complete their press reports and know the pulse of the street. In addition to its vital location in central Baghdad, it has become a symbol of rejection of oppression and the launching of injustice.
