BAGHDAD, Iraq -
The first session of parliament may be delayed until September 15 because of political differences, a senior political source said.
"The first session of the parliament will not witness the election of the president of the council and his deputies because of the absence of a political agreement on that," the source said, adding that the meeting could be postponed to September 15 due to political differences.
A political source said yesterday that the countdown to the new session of the House of Representatives has begun, noting that President Fuad Masum may "wait" to convene until the end of the constitutional period.
The Iraqi constitution provides that the President of the Republic (after the ratification of the results) within 15 days from the date of ratification by a presidential decree the new Council of Representatives to convene under the chairmanship of the oldest members to elect the President of the Council and his deputies, then move the House of Representatives to choose the President of the Republic, The most representative parliamentary formation within 30 days of his election.
