BAGHDAD / obelisk: The Secretary-General of the United Nations Ban Ki-moon today announced the appointment of Bulgarian Nikolai Mladenov as his Special Representative for Iraq and Head of the United Nations Mission to help Iraq (UNAMI).
This came in a statement to the UN mission in Iraq got "obelisk" a copy of which, he said, adding that Mladenov replace Martin Kobler of Germany, which Secretary-General expressed his "gratitude for his dedicated service and excellent leadership of the mission."
The statement noted that Mladenov was the Minister of Foreign Affairs of Bulgaria for the period from February 2010 to March 2013, also served as defense minister in Bulgaria (July 2009 January 2010), and became a member of the European Parliament, and a member of the Foreign Affairs Committee and dialogue on Iraq (May 2007 to June 2009). He was also a member of the Bulgarian Parliament, 2001, 2005.
He also served Mladenov several positions in government sectors and non-governmental organizations, including the World Bank, and the National Democratic Institute, the International Republican Institute.
He holds a Master of Arts in War Studies from the Royal College in London, and a master's degree and a bachelor's degree in international relations at the University of National and World Economy of Sofia, in Bulgaria.
Mladenov was born in Bulgaria in 1972, is married and has one child.
