Parliament Speaker Receives US Secretary of State

US Secretary of State Mike Pompeo arrived in the capital Baghdad, and was received by House Speaker Mohammed Halboussi.
"Bombay arrived in Baghdad and Halbusi received him to discuss the political and economic developments and the relations between the two countries," media reports said.
White House spokeswoman Sarah Sanders said at the end of last month that US Secretary of State Mike Pompeo would meet with Prime Minister Adel Abdul Mahdi in Baghdad at the beginning of January.

WASHINGTON (AFP) - US Secretary of State Mike Pompeo is to visit Baghdad on Wednesday for a one-day visit, a senior political source said Wednesday.
"The American minister arrived in Baghdad and was greeted by a number of Iraqi officials and staff of the American embassy," an Arab newspaper quoted the source as saying. "The program includes meetings with Iraqi officials, most notably Prime Minister Adel Abdul Mahdi."
The source, who asked not to be named, said that "during the visit, Pompeo is likely to discuss three prominent issues, namely, the US sanctions against Iran, especially Iraq's request for an exemption from sanctions specifically related to gas and electricity, In Iraq, while the third file will be the stabilization of Iraqi cities liberated from the organization of a supporter, and the program of rehabilitation and ensure that the return of violence to it.
The source added that "Pompeo's visit to Baghdad will take a day at the most, a visit with specific missions," pointing out that "it will contribute to calm the atmosphere after the visit of President Donald Trump embarrassing to Iraq, finally."
